AHF COSTUME CONTEST GUIDELINES

 

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and ghouls, and all you creatures of the night, Appalachian HorrorFest is having the most spine-tingling Costume Contest in town! We’re gathering here in the heart of the eerie Appalachian Mountains to celebrate all things macabre, mysterious, and downright terrifying. What better way to embrace the spirit of this event than through the art of costume?

 

Categories and Prizes

First and second-place prizes will be awarded in each category.  Judges will evaluate costumes for creativity, quality, detail, and presentation.  Costumes may be handmade or store-bought. Handmade and self-constructed costumes are highly encouraged but not necessary.  This year’s costume contest will have three distinct categories: a) Movie and Media Characters, b) Original Characters, and c) Best Overall.  

Movie and Media Characters – To qualify for this category, your costume must reflect a specific character from a movie, book, cartoon, television series, comic book, anime, manga, video, or roleplaying game that falls within the horror genre.   First Prize $100     Second Prize $50

Original Characters – To qualify for this category, your costume must be a public domain character or costume, such as a witch, ghoul, zombie, ghost, or any other character within the horror genre, not associated with a specific media or franchise.    First Prize $100     Second Prize $50

Best Overall – To qualify for this category, you must win first-place in either the Movie and Media Characters or Original Characters category.    First Prize $150     Second Prize $75

 

Contest Rules

The rules for the contest are listed as follows:

  • All contestants must arrive in their complete costume. There are no dressing rooms available.
  • The costume must not obstruct other attendees’ view of the stage.
  • The costume may not contain glitter, fake liquid blood, or other substances that may potentially stain or damage the venue seating in any way.
  • The costume may not contain overt nudity, obscene props such as adult toys, or insensitive imagery.
  • The costume may not contain actual weapons as props or accessories. All blades must be plastic or foam. Any prop guns must be plastic and identified with an orange tip.
  • The contestant may not use confetti or silly string.
  • The contestant may not bring or use airsoft guns as part of their costume.
  • The contestant may not use any projectiles.
  • The contestant may not bring or use real baseball bats or clubs.
  • The contestant may not use open flames or pyrotechnics as part of their costume.
  • The contestant may not use live animals as part of their costume.
  • The contestant must be 18 years of age or older to register.  

 

Photograph and Video Policy

By your presence at this event, you hereby consent to the use and reproduction by Appalachian HorrorFest of your name, photo, or likeness and any statements made by you in whole or in part, for the purpose of advertising, marketing, and promotions in any medium.  You understand that this release does not obligate Appalachian HorrorFest to use your name, photo, likeness, or statements in any advertisement or promotion.  If you do not want your likeness photographed or statements filmed and potentially used, please do not enter the costume contest.
